Graduated in Medicine from Universidade Federal de São Paulo (1982), master's (1985) and a PhD in Molecular Biology (1988) from Universidade Federal de São Paulo. Postdoctoral Fellow in Neurophysiology at UCLA (1988-1991). Associate Professor (1994) and Professor of Physiology Holder (1998), Member of CA-BF CNPq 2000-2003 Deputy Coordinator of FAPESP's Scientific Director 2003-2006 Researcher level 1A of CNPq (since 2007), Grand Cross the National Order of Scientific Merit (2010), Member of the State of São Paulo Academy of Sciences (2007) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2010), Graduate Pro-Rector of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (2005-2008) President of the Federation of Societies for Experimental Biology (FeSBE) (2007-2011), is the present Director of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) and sectoral Editor Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research. Currently Executive Manager of Technology and Innovation Valley (Vale) and responsible for the implementation of the Vale Technology Institute. It is also since 2016 vice-president of the National Association for Research and Development of Innovative Companies (ANPEI). It is active in neuronal plasticity, basic mechanisms of acupuncture. epilepsy, neuronal degeneration, stem cell physiology and pathophysiology of sleep, S & T management.
